All Marriage Therapies Are Not Created Equal

While there are multiple ways to approach couples counseling or marriage therapy, only one is backed by 20 years of research – Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Founded by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT is the only approach to couples’ counseling that boasts a 75% effectiveness rate with 90% showing some level of improvement according to the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT).
What Makes EFT So Successful?
  1. Where most forms of couples counseling focus on stopping the fighting, the goal of EFT is to increase intimacy. In our practice, we have found that even if a couple stops fighting, it does not guarantee they will draw closer together. But if they can create trust, safety, and intimacy in their relationship – they will likely reduce their fighting as a result! Our goal is to create a safe haven where new ways of interacting can bring closeness and permanent change.
  1. EFT is successful where other methods have failed. According to Dr. Dianne Grande, marriage therapy prior to the 1980s had only about a 50% success rate. Even couples who learned new ways to communicate with each other found themselves slipping back into old habits after just a few months. As EFT gained popularity in subsequent years, success rated increased dramatically.
  1. EFT effective in helping couples, families and individuals reduce the symptoms of a wide range of mood disorders and mental health conditions, including depression and PTSD. By creating secure attachments, EFT soothes the brain which calms the entire central nervous system. And when our bodies are calm, we are more able to experience the intimate connections we so desperately desire.
  1. The practitioners of EFT are highly skilled. The process is arduous which means your therapist has dedicated considerable effort to providing you with the best care possible. We cannot guarantee outcomes since every couple, family and individual is different; however, our team at Family Renewal Counseling is committed to serving you.
